“Why else would two intelligent men—the Reverends Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson—proclaim that ‘God’ allowed the massacre of three thousand Americans on September 11, 2001, because of lesbians, feminists, and abortion? Why else would an Iranian cleric declare in 2010 that promiscuous women caused devastating killer earthquakes, and that the only way to prevent earthquakes is ‘to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes’? Why else would a Jewish man call the police when a group of schoolgirls began singing a prayer at the Western Wall? Relying on Old Testament scripture, he claimed that ‘a woman’s voice is nakedness,’ a siren’s song, enticing men to their spiritual deaths.

“Why don’t we recognize the misogyny hiding behind the face of ‘God’? Any religion is seriously flawed and misguided when it discriminates against half the world’s population and does not honor ‘God’s’ creation.

“Believing ‘God’ is male has created a male-dominated world, equating ‘God’s’ gender to male supremacy. Blaming Eve for man’s downfall, for tempting Adam and bringing sin and evil into the world, has engendered the idea that women are inferior, lustful, devious, and must be controlled. Whether or not you come from a religious tradition, these beliefs affect you: They form the origin of male privilege and female subjugation, the source of violence against women.”
